This Is Not Mayor Whitmire's First Rodeo!

Mayor John Whitmire, as he often says, "This is not my first rodeo," is actively tackling the challenges inherited at City Hall and remains committed to promoting government transparency, improving public safety, and solving problems. Six weeks into his role, the mayor is building a team of experienced public servants who share his vision of a stronger Houston. He is also working closely with Council Members to ensure constituent's needs are being met.

Regarding the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, Vice Mayor Pro Tem presented a proclamation on behalf of Mayor Whitmire, making Feb 23 "Go Texan" Day in Houston. The mayor is actively involved in the city's community events, including the Rodeo parade and celebrations, showcasing his dedication to the city.

Mayor Whitmire recently appointed new leadership to the Houston Housing Authority to address concerns about financial mismanagement and improve operational effectiveness. Additionally, City Council endorsed 17 new affordable housing proposals, highlighting the administration's commitment to providing quality, affordable housing options in the city.

In terms of transportation, Elizabeth Gonzalez-Brock was appointed as the new Chair of METRO, becoming the first Hispanic woman to lead the Metropolitan Transit Authority of Harris County. The mayor emphasized the importance of transforming METRO into a model of transit, accountability, and transparency.

Furthermore, Mayor Whitmire welcomed new Port of Houston Commissioner Thomas Jones, highlighting the economic impact of the Port on Texas and the nation.

The mayor expressed his support for first responders during the Houston Fire Department cadet graduation, emphasizing the city's commitment to public safety. He also attended a special service at Lakewood Church after a tragic shooting, showing solidarity with the community.

Mayor Whitmire's international collaboration efforts were evident in his meeting with a delegation from Japan's Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport, and Tourism to discuss climate resilience and disaster recovery policies.

He also engaged with diverse community leaders during Lunar New Year celebrations, delivering proclamations to various community organizations. The mayor underscored the importance of working with different communities to create a cohesive and inclusive city infrastructure.

Finally, Mayor Whitmire addressed animal welfare concerns at a press conference, highlighting his commitment to championing animal welfare initiatives during his time in the Texas Senate and now as mayor.
