Congressman Troy E. Nehls, a Republican representative who has won multiple general elections since 2020, posted several messages on his social media account during Labor Day weekend, addressing both the holiday and violence in Chicago.
On September 1, 2025, Nehls extended greetings to Americans for the holiday, writing: “Happy Labor Day to the hardworking Patriots who built our great nation and keep it moving forward. Have a safe and blessed day! https://t.co/Zfzh8FT8cz”.
The following day, September 2, he referenced gun violence over the long weekend in Chicago by posting: “At least 54 shot. 7 killed. Labor Day weekend. Democrat-run Chicago.” In a subsequent post at nearly the same time, he shared a link without additional comment: “https://t.co/XeQ3upQgVF”.
Congressman Nehls represents Texas’ 22nd congressional district and has maintained his seat through several election cycles. He first secured victory in 2020 against Sri Preston Kulkarni with just over half of the vote. He was re-elected in both 2022 and 2024 with more than sixty percent of the vote each time, defeating Jamie Jordan and Marquette Greene-Scott respectively.
His posts come amid ongoing national discussions about public safety during major holidays as well as debates over gun violence in large American cities.
