Congressman Troy E. Nehls has used his social media platform to criticize the Democratic Party’s handling of the ongoing government shutdown and federal spending priorities. Nehls, who has won multiple elections in Texas’s 22nd congressional district, made several posts on October 14 and 15, 2025, addressing these issues.
On October 14, Nehls wrote, “Today is Day 14 of the Democrat Government Shutdown. Chuck Schumer and the Democrat Party are holding the government—and the American people—hostage to appease radical leftists. They continue to put America last.”
Later that day, he criticized specific federal spending items in another post: “This is what Democrats want to spend American’s hard-earned tax dollars on: $24.6M to ‘climate resilience’ in Honduras; $13.4M to ‘civic engagement’ in Zimbabwe; $3.9M for ‘LGBTQI+ democracy grants’ in the Balkans; $2.9M to ‘desert locust risk reduction’ in the Horn of”.
On October 15, Nehls commented on efforts by former President Trump during the shutdown: “Democrats are upset that President Trump found a way to pay our troops and protect vulnerable Americans from the consequences of the Democrat Government Shutdown. This is today’s Democrat Party.”
Nehls has represented Texas’s 22nd congressional district since his initial election victory in 2020, when he defeated Sri Preston Kulkarni with 51.5% of the vote. He was re-elected in 2022 and 2024, defeating Jamie Jordan and Marquette Greene-Scott with over 62% of the vote in each contest.
