Many establishments in Houston did not waste time welcoming back customers when Gov. Greg Abbott’s multi-phase reopening plan allowed more businesses and services to open.
Among the stipulations from the governor was that places opting to reopen do so with limited capacity and COVID-19 related modifications. But several bars and restaurants apparently did not get the memo.
Clé Houston in Midtown gained social media attention when video of a pool party on the nightclub’s roof went viral, prompting a flurry of complaints and citations. Harris County received 10 complaints regarding Clé, just a fraction of the more than 1,200 weekend complaints, the Houston Chronicle reported.
Despite the flurry of reports and Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner’s vow to crack down, the Houston Fire Department and Harris County Fire Marshal did not issue any citations.
Houston Fire Chief Sam Pena said the last citation for violating a social distance order was written on May 9.
