A rental assistance program has been initiated in Fort Bend County to help residents impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic pay rent, mortgage or utilities.

Community Impact Newspaper reported the $19.5 million program will distribute funds in three phases from June to November.

“The main criteria for being eligible for these funds [are]: First, you were damaged by this pandemic and, second, you have a need," county auditor Ed Sturdivant said. A household can be approved for a maximum amount of $2,000 a month and funds will be distributed directly to a utility company, mortgage company or landlord.

County residents can find more information or apply online. They can also apply by calling 281-238-2273.

Sturdivant is encouraging resident that need assistance to apply as soon as possible.

“If [residents] have applied — and whether they got in on the first round, or they didn’t make it in before the funding ran out — we will have their application, and we will reach back out to them [during subsequent phases] and ask if they still have a need,” Sturdivant told Community Impact.
