The City of Houston announced a significant leadership change within the Houston Public Library System (HPL) as Cynthia Wilson was appointed as the interim Executive Director. Mayor John Whitmire expressed his gratitude towards Wilson for taking on the role and outlined her responsibilities, stating, "I have asked her to immediately go to work on improving communications, management, employee morale, and operations throughout HPL."

Cynthia Wilson, a former educator and executive leader in workplace performance management, brings a wealth of experience to her new position. She has previously served as an elementary school principal, District Superintendent for the Houston Independent School District, Superintendent of Schools in the Orangeburg, S.C., Consolidated School District, and Chief of Staff and Chief Human Capital Management Officer for the Dallas Independent School District.

Speaking about Wilson's appointment, Mayor Whitmire highlighted the importance of her role in overseeing the extensive HPL network, which includes 44 public service units, various libraries, research centers, technology centers, and satellite locations. With a service area covering a significant population, the Houston Public Library System aims to provide comprehensive customer-focused services to the city's 2.3 million residents.

Dr. Wilson's educational background includes a Doctor of Education from South Carolina State University, a Master of Education from the University of Houston, and a bachelor's degree in psychology from the University of Texas at Austin. Her immediate appointment as interim Executive Director marks the transition from Dr. Rhea Lawson, who had been serving as HPL's Executive Director since 2005.

In recognizing Dr. Lawson's contributions, the City of Houston expressed gratitude for her years of service and extended best wishes for her future endeavors. As Cynthia Wilson steps into her new role, the focus remains on enhancing the operations and services provided by the Houston Public Library System under her leadership.
