The Metropolitan Transit Authority of Harris County (METRO Houston) Board of Directors has welcomed its newest members appointed by Mayor John Whitmire and approved by vote during a Houston City Council meeting. The Board of Directors, which serves as the governing body of METRO, aims to deliver a public transportation system that provides safe, clean, reliable, and accessible mobility options throughout the Houston region.

Mayor Whitmire's appointments have led to a historic moment with a significant number of women serving on the board at one time. This includes the first Vietnamese American woman appointee and the first Hispanic female chair, Elizabeth Gonzalez Brock. Upon the appointment, Mayor Whitmire expressed his pride in the diverse representation on the board, stating, "Having a METRO and Board importantly recognizes the value of varied experiences and the importance of accessibility for all."

Chair Elizabeth Gonzalez Brock, who swore in the new members, shared her excitement about the new additions to the board, highlighting their commitment to making METRO a preferred transportation option. She stated, "This is a robust team that is fully committed to making METRO a safe, clean, accessible, and viable option that people choose to use."

The nine-person board consists of members nominated by the mayor of Houston, Harris County Commissioners Court, and mayors from other cities in the METRO service area. Board members serve two-year terms with the possibility of serving a maximum of eight years.

In a call to action, Mayor Whitmire emphasized the importance of transparency and the need for METRO to maintain and expand mobility options. He stated, "Now it is time to go to work. I expect METRO to operate with transparency and maintain and create additional mobility options. The board's collective leadership will enhance METRO's capacity to positively impact the continued growth and success of the City of Houston and region."
