Mayor John Whitmire, in collaboration with the Mayor's Hispanic Advisory Board, has commenced a month-long celebration of Hispanic culture and achievements by honoring individuals who have significantly contributed to the Houston Hispanic community. On October 1, Mayor Whitmire awarded three Houstonians for their notable contributions to the city.
Dr. Andrea Tania Cruz was recognized last month with the 2024 Mayor's Hispanic Heritage Award in Healthcare. This award honors individuals who have increased awareness of healthcare issues affecting Hispanics and have implemented improvements. Dr. Cruz is noted for her work in pediatric medical specialties, including traumatic brain injury and tuberculosis.
In upcoming weeks, additional recipients will be acknowledged during Tuesday City Council Public sessions through proclamations from Mayor Whitmire.
"Houston is a great city with great people," stated Mayor Whitmire. "Hispanic Heritage Month allows me to highlight the achievements of dedicated men and women making significant daily contributions that impact Houstonians' lives."
Elva Trevino received the Mayor's Arts in the Community award for her efforts in enriching creativity within the Hispanic community through art programs. Claudia Ortega-Hogue was honored with the Mayor's Community Activist Award for her volunteer work aimed at improving and educating the Hispanic community.
Elvia Martinez was awarded the Mayor's Education in the Community Award for her commitment to increasing educational opportunities within academics and sportsmanship. Danna Munguia received recognition as a young leader with the Mayor's Youth Activist Award for her volunteerism.
Irma Diaz-Gonzalez was presented with the Mayor's Lifetime Achievement Award for her lifelong service to the community, while Juan Hernandez received the Mayor's Public Service Award for his dedication to enhancing life quality through public service.
Lenora Sorola-Pohlman, Co-Chair of the Mayor’s Hispanic Advisory Board, expressed gratitude: “We are pleased to advise the mayor and to recognize these unsung heroes.”
A special reception celebrating all honorees will be held on Monday, October 14.
