CenterPoint Energy Donates $1 Million for Energy Assistance in Honor of Mayor Sylvester Turner

CenterPoint Energy, a leading energy company, has announced a generous donation of $1 million in Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner's name. The donation is dedicated to providing energy bill assistance for low-income residents in the Greater Houston area. The funds will be managed by the Gulf Coast Community Services Association (GCCSA), a local non-profit organization.

CenterPoint Energy CEO Dave Lesar expressed the company's admiration for Mayor Turner's commitment and service to the city. Lesar stated, "Given Mayor Turner's selfless commitment and outstanding service to our city for the past eight years, this felt like a fitting way to celebrate him and build upon his legacy of helping others across our communities."

The GCCSA, as the Community Action Agency authorized by the federal government, will oversee the distribution of funds to qualified applicants. This includes determining eligibility and ensuring that the assistance reaches those in need. Dr. Jonita Reynolds, CEO of GCCSA, expressed gratitude for the opportunity to eradicate poverty and provide stability to struggling households. Reynolds said, "Through CenterPoint Energy and Mayor Turner's generosity, we are proud to be able to play an integral part in minimizing the adverse impact of energy poverty on low-income households."

Mayor Turner, in response to the donation, expressed his gratitude for the support received throughout his tenure. Mayor Turner stated, "It has been an incredible honor to serve our great city for my eight years in office. The GCCSA will begin accepting applications for energy assistance starting on December 4, 2023. Low-income residents or families living in CenterPoint Energy's service areas can apply online at www.gccsa.org. This initiative aims to provide relief to households struggling to pay their energy bills, ensuring that they have access to essential services.
