Mayor John Whitmire of Houston called for a moment of silence on May 14, 2024, to honor the life and legacy of the late Reverend William A. Lawson, founding pastor of Wheeler Avenue Baptist Church. The Mayor addressed Houstonians from City Hall, expressing his admiration for Rev. Lawson's significant contributions to civil rights and social justice.

"Rev. William Lawson is an icon among icons. He is one of the reasons our city is so great. He helped us during civil rights and social justice like probably no other individual in the country because Houston benefited from his leadership and character," said Mayor Whitmire. "It saddens us, but though God doesn't allow us to choose when we lose a loved one, he does allow us to celebrate their lives. I'm certain all of Houston will celebrate this great man's life in the coming days. Our condolences go to the Lawson and Wheeler Avenue Baptist Church families."

Known as "Houston's pastor", Rev. Lawson was a guiding light in the city, leading efforts against social injustice and systemic racism alongside Archbishop Joseph Fiorenza and Rabbi Samuel Karff, known collectively as the "Three Amigos". His influence extended beyond his church walls, helping shape Houston into a more inclusive community.

Rev. Lawson's legacy continues through initiatives such as the William A. Lawson Institute for Peace and Prosperity, which works towards uplifting underprivileged communities and instilling hope for a brighter future. His dedication to serving marginalized individuals remains one of his most notable contributions towards creating a more equitable society.

Rev. Lawson was deeply rooted in love and faith, living out these values alongside his late wife Audrey and their four children over six decades of service. As we bid farewell to this titan of faith, we remember his legacy with respect and strive to embody it.

His light will forever guide us towards creating a fairer, safer, and more equal Houston in his honor and memory. Rev. William A. Lawson, your legacy will forever inspire and guide us. Rest in peace.
